Oda Eiichirou

I’ve been a huge One Piece fan ever since a good friend of mine shipped a copy of October 2001’s Shounen Jump to my house from Japan with a note that said “Happy Belated Birthday!” One Piece’s artwork was so much more different from traditional manga trends of beautiful boys or beautiful girls, and it was refreshing. His odd characters always had so much charisma, and I found myself wanting to join in with Luffy and his Straw Hat Pirates on their adventures. Oda has an incredible imagination, and I still can’t believe he’s only 34 years old.
I recently caught up with the 500 chaptered comic, lots of crazy stuff ensued. It’s incredible that this manga has lasted so long, Oda only planned it for 5 years but now it has exceeded 10. Amazing. Here are some of his illustrations:

the end, for now.

I’ve realized that I’ve developed some silly habits since entering EC.
Like thinking about really random things in the most serious moments of critiques (Is that a duck?), bursting into song when no one’s around in the gallery at night, talking to myself, and having the constant daydream of being a mob boss. My mafioso name is Maria. If anyone wonders why I don’t talk, it’s because I’m caught up in a drug ring heist with a rival gang whose leader is my long lost brother named Alfonso. On odd days, I am a female fighter caught up in a worldly conflict. I’ve got really cool karate moves and a sword (I think this is because I miss playing Final Fantasy).
I’m gonna miss playing on that old beat up piano in room 271. And that gross sticky feeling on my fingers, I think I absorbed at least a year of art hippie bacteria on that thing. I had epic times with those beat up notes, but half way into the second semester, someone thought it would be a brilliant idea to rip off the middle C. I am still peeved about that.
It was a good year, though I feel like I haven’t done anything memorable. I guess that means I have to burn everything and start over again. That’s always fun. I’m not sure Illustration is the right path to go, but hey, I think I’m ready to get lost again.
I’ll probably try to keep up with this blog, just to post artists I find and fall in love with.
Have a great summer, everyone!
